Before your visit, you might like to take a look at some of our frequently asked questions.


Are you licensed for civil ceremonies?

Yes! We are fully licensed to hold civil ceremonies. Ceremonies at Shilstone can take place in the rustic ceremony barn, or on the steps in front of the house.

Do you organise this with Devon County Council or do we need to do that?

Payment can only be taken from the couple themselves so you will need to contact the Registras to book your actual wedding ceremony.

How many people can you accommodate for the ceremony?

Our rustic ceremony barn can seat up to 150 guests with some additional standing space.

We would really like to get married in church, is this an option?

Of course! There are a number of beautiful churches within a few miles from Shilstone. 

Is there a maximum number of guests we can have for our reception?

Our marquee (weddings April – October) can seat 220 guests for your weddings breakfast.

Our rustic barn and terrace room (weddings November – March) can seat between 60 and 80 guests. Please contact us directly to discuss your requirements.

Can we have additional evening guests?

Of course! There is no per head charge for evening guests, so the more the merrier!

Can we use our own caterers?

All catering at Shilstone is provided by our talented in house chefs. Our menus are flexible and we can adapt them to suit your unique tastes and requirements.

Can we bring our own drinks?

We ask that all drinks are provided by Shilstone. We offer a generous drinks package which is excellent value for money. We also have a fully stocked bar situated within the marquee for guests to buy drinks in the evening. We accept both cash and card payments at our paid bar.

Can we have fireworks?

Because of our beautiful rural location and close proximity to local livestock, we can’t allow fireworks or Chinese lanterns at Shilstone.

Can we have a live band?

Definitely! We’ve got some fantastic bands on our recommended suppliers list.

Do you have any volume restrictions?

We have a specialist sound system provided by www.directacousticsolutions.com which ensures that music is concentrated onto the dancefloor, but elsewhere in the marquee you can converse at a normal level. This also means that the sound won’t escape and affect our neighbours. For more information please contact us directly.

We would like to bring some of our own décor, how soon can we have access to the venue to decorate?

Access to the venue for the wedding party is from 10am on the day of your wedding. If there is no other event at Shilstone the day before your wedding, we may be able to arrange access to the venue the day before. 

Do you ever book more than 1 wedding per day?

Never. We offer complete exclusivity for the day of your wedding.

Do you cater for smaller weddings?

In our peak season (May – September) we require that a minimum of 60 guests are catered for on a Friday and 80 guests on a Saturday. We can host smaller, more intimate weddings on weekdays and off peak dates.

Are you able to make any recommendations for suppliers?

Absolutely. Please visit our recommended suppliers page for a full list of our favourites.

Who sets up the tables and clears up the venue the next day?

Our full team of staff will set up the tables, chairs, table linen and cutlery. We would ask that centrepieces, table names / numbers, guest place names and additional décor items are put in place by members of the wedding party. We will clear up all of the tables after the wedding and put aside any decorations ready for collection.

Are we allowed to throw confetti?

Of course, we simply ask that either fresh or dried petals are used and must be thrown only in outdoor spaces.
